Origin

              The promotion of life education in Taiwan starts from the secondary school life education plan launched by former Department of Education of Taiwan in 1997. Since 1999 when Taiwan government adjusted its function and organization, the Ministry of Education (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry) accepted the work of promoting life education. In order to signify the importance of promoting life education, the Ministry stipulated 2001 as “Life Education Year” and issued the Ministry of Education Medium-Term Plan of Life Education (2001-2004) which stipulated the implementation of 16-year life education from elementary school to university and laid an important milestone for the promotion of life education in Taiwan. Given the frequent occurrence of students’ self-injurious incident in campus, the Ministry made the Ministry of Education Three-Level Prevention Plan of Student Depression and Self-injury on Campus in 2007 as the priority of the medium-term plan of life education from 2007 to 2009. The focus of the medium-term plan of life education from 2010 to 2013 was to take “All-Around Development, All-Around Care, All-Around Education” as the main axis, and emphasized the communication among school, family and society, strengthened the integration and continuation, and developed features and innovation and other objectives and directions.

     

              Based on the said plans, the medium-term plan of life education from 2014 to 2017 was made by wide collection of opinions from experts, scholars, leaders and teachers of schools and kindergartens at all levels, life education related private groups, parents, local educational administrators in terms of the effect, problem and feasible strategy of the implementation and promotion of life education, materials about open opinions and questionnaires of over a thousand of person times, as well as the investigation by some important industrial, official and academic representatives who were concerned about life education, and then the promotion strategy and project of the plan was also established. The promotion project of the medium-term plan covers levels of school, family and society as well as the life-long development stages from infant to adult, practically making efforts in a more comprehensive and diversified way. Additionally, to follow the development and demand of times, it will constantly make introspection and innovation so as to realize the dynamic combination of internalization and globalization. With sustainable development and practical implementation, this plan will become a featured education plan of Taiwan and further promoting the mode and achievements of life education, enhancing sharing and exchange with the world and jointly building a better world village.
