Everybody has their own life issues to solve, which is also true to children with intellectual disabilities. Yet, how do we make these children to learn the life issues they are facing in order to understand life values and further to respect life so as to keep calm and easy when they are confronting with the unknown life?
Special education teachers from National Taoyuan Agricultural & Industrial Vocational High School (TYAI) have designed a series of life education courses, enabling TYAI students with intellectual disabilities to receive sufficient life education. From 2010 up till now, these special education teachers has been committed to the design of related lesson plans. The origin of life education course was to guide students to know what death is in order to understand that death is a necessary process of life, and then further to guide them to confront death and make preparation for life, undertaking such a phased approach to lead students to face life and death. The course of gender equality education combines with the professional education feature of the classes of mental retardation, guides students to explore the occupational gender stereotypes, encourages them to consider more possibilities in professional choice and finds out their own vocational interest as well as future employment orientation.
In recent years, TYAI has won many awards and received identification in lesson plan design competition. In 2010, the lesson plan entitled Never Fear of Death, But No Time to Face which was designed by TYAI teachers -- Ms. Shih Hsiao-Fang, Ms. Hu Man-Li and Huang Chieh-Ju won the Class A Award in National Senior School Lesson Plan Design Competition; in 2011, Ms. Shih Hsiao-Fang, Ms. Hu Man-Li and Ms. Wu Wei-Hsun designed the lesson plan entitled Who Said Gender Matters and won the Class A Award in the Integration of Gender Equality and Life Education Issues into National Senior School Lesson Plan Design Competition; in 2012, Ms. Shih Hsiao-Fang and Ms. Hu Man-Li’s Love Never Fails won the Excellent Award in that competition ; in 2013, with The Last Policy of Life and Identical? Or Different?, Ms. Shih Hsiao-Fang, Ms. Hu Man-Li and Ms. Wu Wei-Hsunn won the Class A Award in the competition again.
Through designing lesson plans related to life education and gender equality and integrating them with curriculum, TYAI special education team hopes to help students with intellectual disabilities to learn and understand the important issues in life in a lively and diversified teaching approach in order to bravely and honestly face branch points of life and to learn how to self-care when stuck in difficulties. “How interesting the journey of life is!” Life is full of surprises. It is the difference and unknown things that make life much more valuable. TYAI expects students to learn happily and enjoy different life experiences via course design and different lesson plan creations.
